P54 Saint Giles Pilgrim badge.
P54 Saint Giles Pilgrim badge.

P54 Saint Giles Pilgrim badge.

St Giles was an extremely popular saint in 13th century England; no doubt helped by the saint’s cult centre at Arles in France being on an established route to Compostella and Rome. The badge depicts St Giles as an abbot along with the hind (deer) that, according to his legend, was sheltered by Giles as it fled from hunters. To the left is the thicket that Giles miraculously caused to appear and in which the hind sheltered. It then became his companion while he lived as a hermit. St Giles also holds a chain, alluding to his reputation as an intercessor for prisoners.
13th century.

48x 34mm including the sewing loops. Fitted with a modern brooch bar, but also available without a pin for those who prefer to use the sewing loops (see separate listing in main pilgrim badge section of the website).
